Worms World Party
On my old Apple II it was Artillery. On my childhood neighbour’s IBM-PC it was Scorched Earth. Nowadays, despite a million knockoffs, there is no denying that Worms is the defining game in the turn-based artillery genre. And of all the Worms games released, one of the finest without a doubt is Worms World Party on the N-Gage.
Since the announcement of its development to the day it arrived in the mail I was spectacularly excited. With the possible exception of Civilisation (also coming soon to the N-Gage) there has been no game that has so wasted my time and the idea of having this on my mobile just made me all giddy like a little school girl (eh? - Ed.). While the initial waves of logo splash screens for everything from Team 17 to Synergenix's Mophun middleware was a bit much, the instant the game itself starts up you know it's going to be top notch Worms start to finish. Players have the option of a single player game where you can do training missions; regular missions; a random match; a multiplayer game where you can play with up to 3 other players over Bluetooth; and even Arena multiplayer where you can use your GPRS connection to connect and play with players all over the world, in either ranked or unranked combat. To put it another way, this is a very well rounded and complete Worms experience.
Most of the series' famous weapons and tools are faithfully intact... Actually, other than Napalm I can't think of something missing. Super Sheep, baseball bats, shotguns, bazookas, the Holy Hand Grenade, dynamite, ninja rope, bungees, air strikes, girders, and on and on are all identical to their former incarnations and the twists that each of these has on gameplay at any given moment keeps the experience fresh and new even after hours upon hours of play. Take in the lay of the land, measure the wind, chose the right tool for the job and pray you haven't left yourself open when it's all over. Equal parts strategy, timing and skill this is classic, timeless, perfect Worms.
Easily the biggest feature in the game is its Arena support which allows you, anywhere you can get a signal, anywhere in the world, to play anyone else, anywhere they can get a signal anywhere in the world, in a heated game of Worms. Bravo! Sitting on the bus? Bust some caps. Riding the rails? Cut loose with a cluster bomb. Waiting in line? Hope on the Arena and conquer the world with liberal applications of Super Sheep and pinpoint accurate grenade tossing. This game and feature alone completely justify buying an N-Gage at its current low price.
I personally hadn't played a good round of Worms since the PC Worm's Armageddon release years ago and once I started playing this was unable to put it down. If not for fear of being flogged by Ewan for taking too long (still sore from X-Men Legends) I would probably be playing it still. In the end I think we have another killer app for the N-Gage with only its existence on other platforms and occasional Arena connection troubles keeping it from achieving that rare must have status.
